SUMMARY:Ruby/Horsethief & Westwater Family River Trip
DESCRIPTION:Who: Open to veterans and their families\, Ages 10+ \nDetails\nWho: The BOEC extends a special invitation exclusively to military veterans and their families.  The program is designed to accommodate veterans who have sustained a moderate to significant injury.  Injuries may include but are not limited to brain injuries\, PTSD\, and/or amputees.  Due to the social aspect of outdoor adventures and camping\, participants must be ready to enjoy the company of other people. \nWhat: A classic western river trip.  A two-part trip\, the first part involves floating down Ruby and Horse Thief Canyons of the Colorado River in canoes\, inflatable kayaks and paddleboards.  This first section includes 25 miles of scenic views\, wildlife viewing\, and opportunities for short hikes while paddling down river.  There will also be support rafts to carry gear\, and available for anyone who may prefer to float down in a raft. \nThe second part involves a single day of fun and exciting white water rafting through Westwater Canyon of the Colorado River.  This section of river is rated class III+ to class IV.  You must be at least 10 years old and up to participate in Whitewater section of river. This section includes 17 miles and 11 rapids. \nWhere: The Colorado River in southwestern Colorado and Southeastern Utah.  The Colorado river cuts through beautiful canyon country and offers a mild to white water experience.  This is a remote area where there will be no cell phone service. \nWhy: A multi-day river trip is an ideal setting to reintegrate\, acquire new knowledge and skills together\, build new bonds\, have fun together\, and relax.  This offers a chance to get away from every day routines and daily life distractions\, where one can find new appreciation for each other\, and rediscover their strength and solidity as we travel down the beautiful canyons of the Colorado River.  The Colorado river will provide us great access to a spectacular wilderness environment while supporting veterans who have mobility restrictions.

Coed.\nAges: 12-16\nFees: $950\, Scholarships Available \nAvailability is limited \nEvent Flyer\nDetails\nWho: Open registration is for boys and girls ages 12 – 16 who are diagnosed with sensory processing disorders\, learning and/or attention deficits and development delays.  BOEC requires that all students be fully independent with self-care tasks\, or be prepared to bring a “buddy” to camp.  Due to the social aspect of outdoor adventures and camping\, participants must be ready to enjoy the company of other people. \nWhat: This outdoor adventure focused trip starts and finishes at the BOEC’s program site in Breckenridge CO. We will be onsite the first and last night of camp but in the middle we will travel to the Buena Vista area to set up a base camp.  This course is packed with high adventure activities ranging from ropes course\, rock climbing\, hiking\, rafting\, and camping.  Throughout the course students will be involved in all aspects of camp craft including cooking\, cleaning and camp set-up.  Through outdoor activities students will have the opportunity to develop social skills\, teamwork traits and leadership qualities that will transfer into everyday life.

This 3-day camp is designed to meet the unique needs of these children and will adapt activities to foster success and a sense of achievement while camping with peers in a mountain setting. This camp will focus on promoting independence\, confidence\, social skills\, and self-esteem. Youth will live\, work and play in a “family” group of six to eight campers\, two to three outdoor educators from the BOEC and two specialized therapists from Children’s Hospital Colorado (occupational therapists\, physical therapists\, speech therapists or recreational therapists). Campers will assist in cooking and cabin clean-up along with peers and adults and will participate in a variety of activities such as climbing\, canoeing\, ropes courses\, and outdoor education. Other activities include crafts and group games. Involvement in these programs promotes motor skills\, coordination\, and problem solving. \n\nEligible Participants \nThe CamPossible program is intended for children 8-12 years of age with cerebral palsy who are independently mobile with or without the use of adaptive equipment including walkers and crutches. In addition\, the following criteria for participation have been established: \n\nDoes not have significant cognitive or language limitations\nMust be able to use a toilet with minimal assistance from an adult\nMust be able to follow instructions and comply with adult requests\nMust be able to remain in a group of up to 13 people without constant on-on-one attention\nMay not have extreme emotional and/or psychological distress\n\n\nTransportation \nFamilies are responsible for transportation to and from Denver and the Griffith Lodge in Breckenridge. \n\nApplication Process \nTo express interest or questions\, please contact RehabOutdoorPrograms@childrenscolorado.org or 720-478-2329. Applications are due by June 15\, 2023.  \nAll applicants will be screened for appropriateness and must meet all of the requirements for involvement. DESCRIPTION:Dates: June 11-14\, 2023\nWho: Ages 8-18 who have sustained an injury to the brain\nMore information: RehabOutdoorPrograms@childrenscolorado.org \n\nCamp Zenith\, a program of Children’s Hospital Colorado and hosted by Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC)\, is a four-day overnight camp for youth\, ages 8-18\, who have sustained an injury to the brain. Campers will be involved in a variety of activities throughout the week\, which may include hiking\, team/friendship building exercises\, canoeing\, fishing\, climbing\, high-ropes course\, crafts\, and much more! In the evenings\, campers participate in activities such as taking in the music of the Breckenridge Music Festival orchestra\, movie nights\, group games and a modified campfire. BOEC wilderness educators take the lead in planning the menu\, setting up gear and equipment\, and facilitating all activities with support from the staff from the Rehabilitation Department at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Together\, all staff members work together to provide the needed structure and stability for guaranteed fun and success of all campers! Values of acceptance\, honesty\, self-esteem and teamwork are encouraged throughout all camp experiences. Campers are guided in setting their own goals and achieving them to the best of their abilities. Specialized staff from Children’s Hospital Colorado (occupational therapists\, physical therapists\, speech therapists or recreational therapists) support the campers by helping children as needed to promote fun and adventure in the outdoors! \n\nEligible Participants \nThe Camp Zenith summer program is intended for children 8 to 18 years of age who have sustained injuries to the brain. As much as possible\, campers are grouped with abilities and camp experience in mind. \nCampers should be able to tolerate the social stimulation that comes with active involvement in group living and activities during their stay at camp. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own artistic interests and talents to the retreat. SUMMARY:Brain Injury Alliance - Colorado River Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Challenge by Choice Adventure Retreat – Colorado River Trip\, run in partnership with the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado\, features a gentle float down the Colorado River for survivors of an injury to the brain. Putting onto the river at Loma\, Colorado\, this twenty-five-mile-long trip takes you through Ruby and Horsethief Canyons and features gorgeous flat water through a very scenic canyon known for its Bald Eagles\, geologic formations\, and great camping. Your canoe trip will be raft-supported and designed – as are all BOEC trips – to be considerate of the abilities of all our participants. There will be scheduled time for rest\, relaxation\, and regeneration\, which means lots of time for fun and community. Outdoor Education standards such as basic canoeing and safety\, minimum impact camping\, natural history\, and other topics will be covered. This is a great expedition for folks wanting to get away from it all\, but who cannot make the time commitment for a longer trip. \nIncluded in the trip: are food\, river gear (including dry bags\, canoes\, paddles\, life jackets)\, transportation during the program\, river guides\, and quality instruction. This trip will begin and end in Breckenridge\, CO at the BOEC’s Scott Griffith Lodge. Students will need to be dropped off at 9 AM and picked up by 4 PM\, but it’s also possible to arrange to meet our staff at the airport in Grand Junction\, Colorado if traveling from out of state. DESCRIPTION:Overview \nThe Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC)\, in collaboration with the Rocky Mountain MS Center\, brings you Adventures Within\, specifically designed for adults living with multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. \nThis summer retreat provides unique physical outdoor experiences and features activities such as adaptive cycling\, rafting\, whitewater rafting\, canoeing\, kayaking\, hiking\, high ropes course\, rock climbing and plenty of time to enjoy the pristine mountain setting at our 39-acre wilderness campus overlooking historic Breckenridge\, CO. Evenings include home-cooked meals\, sharing stories\, campfires\, and a time to relax. All specialty equipment\, instruction\, fun\, fellowship\, and laughs are included free of charge. \nYou are welcome to bring a friend\, family member\, or care attendant\, if needed. \n\nRegistration \nRegistration is currently open and applications will be accepted up until one month prior to course start. DESCRIPTION:Download CamPossible Flyer. \nOverview \nCamPossible is an overnight camp for kids with cerebral palsy (CP) ages 8-12. This 3-day camp is designed to meet the unique needs of these children and will adapt activities to foster success and a sense of achievement while camping with peers in a mountain setting. \nThe camp will focus on promoting independence\, confidence\, social skills\, and self-esteem. Children will live\, work\, and play in a “family” group of 6-8 campers\, 2-3 outdoor educators from Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center\, and 2-3 specialized therapists (occupational therapist\, physical therapist\, or speech therapist) from Children’s Hospital Colorado. Campers will assist in cooking and cabin clean-up along with peers and adults and will participate in a variety of activities such as climbing\, canoeing\, ropes courses\, and outdoor education. Other activities include crafts and group games. Involvement in these programs promotes motor skills\, coordination\, problem-solving\, and self-confidence. \n\nEligible Participants \nThe CamPossible program is intended for children 8-14 years of age with cerebral palsy who are independently mobile with or without the use of adaptive equipment including walkers and crutches. In addition\, the following criteria for participation have been established: \n\nDoes not have significant cognitive or language limitations\nMust be able to use a toilet with minimal assistance from an adult\nMust be able to follow instructions and comply with adult requests\nMust be able to remain in a group of up to 13 people without constant on-on-one attention\nMay not have extreme emotional an/or psychological distress\n\n\nTransportation \nFamilies are responsible for transportation to and from Denver and the Griffith Lodge in Breckenridge. \n\nApplication Process \nTo express interest or questions\, please contact Shanna Musick\, PT at shanna.musick@childrenscolorado.org or 720-478-2329. SUMMARY:Paddle Into Summer
DESCRIPTION:Join the BOEC and Blue Skies Behavioral Group (BSBG) for 4 days on the water\, June 27-30\, with Paddle Into Summer! Participants\, ages 9-14 with exceptional needs\, will enjoy a variety of water-based activities\, including paddle boarding\, lake paddling\, a full day of whitewater rafting on the Upper Colorado River\, and land-based activities such as the ropes course and rock climbing. Adaptive participation and behavioral needs will be supported by BOEC staff and BSBG’s Board Certified Behavior Analyst. \nAll participants will be responsible for bringing packed lunches each day\, as well as a water bottle\, sunscreen\, and a baseball or otherwise sun-protecting hat. Participants will be dropped off at BOEC’s Scott Griffith Lodge in Breckenridge each morning\, and transportation will be provided when leaving the site. We will be spending most of the time outside every day\, so in addition to what is listed above\, please send participants with everything they may need to stay comfortable. Closed-toed shoes will be needed for hiking and activities. \nTentative Layout Includes: \n\nMonday June 27 – Paddle and Games or Hike @ BOEC (8:30am-2:00pm)\nTuesday June 28 – AM Paddle on Lake Dillon / PM Rock Climb @ Swan Mountain (8:30am-2:00pm)\nWednesday June 29 – Ropes Course and Low Initiatives @ BOEC (8:30am-2:00pm)\nThursday -June 30 Raft Upper Colorado River (8:30am-3:30pm)\n\nPrograms will be provided and led by BOEC’s adaptive recreation specialists. Social interactions\, activity engagement\, problem-solving\, and additional adaptive needs will be provided by Blue Skies Behavioral Group’s Board Certified Behavior Analyst\, who will be present for the duration of each day.

SUMMARY:Camp Zenith - Youth with Brain Injuries
DESCRIPTION:Download Camp Zenith Flyer. \nOverview \nCamp Zenith\, a program of Children’s Hospital Colorado and hosted by Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC)\, is a 4-day\, 3-night overnight camp for children ages 8-18 years who have sustained brain injuries at some point in their development. BOEC staff organizes the daily camp structure and activities with support from the staff from the Rehabilitation Department at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Together\, all staff members work together to provide the needed structure and stability for guaranteed fun and success of all campers! Values of acceptance\, honesty\, self-esteem and teamwork are encouraged throughout all camp experiences. Campers are guided in setting their own goals and achieving them to the best of their abilities. \nBOEC wilderness educators take the lead in planning the menu\, setting up gear and equipment\, and facilitating the ropes course\, canoeing\, hiking\, climbing\, and all activities while the participants are at camp. Staff from Children’s Hospital Colorado support the campers by helping children as needed to promote fun and adventure in the outdoors! Campers will be involved in a variety of activities throughout the week\, which may include; hiking\, team/friendship building exercises\, canoeing\, fishing\, climbing\, and much more! \nAs in the prior years\, Camp Zenith has become an opportunity for many children with brain injuries to try new things in a safe environment\, meet new friends and excel at activities they would not otherwise be exposed to secondary to their physical\, cognitive\, or social demands. Overall\, the camp is a FUN experience and a week that children and staff look forward to each year. We strive to provide enough activity to engage the children all day long\, while also supporting their need for quiet time or naps depending on each child’s needs. \n\nEligible Participants \nThe Camp Zenith summer program is intended for children 8 to 18 years of age who have sustained injuries to the brain. As much as possible\, campers are grouped with abilities and camp experience in mind. \nCampers should be able to tolerate the social stimulation that comes with active involvement in group living and activities during their stay at camp. Behavior that repeatedly disrupts the group process or puts the camper or others in the group at risk cannot be tolerated. \nAdditionally\, campers must be ambulatory and able to manage bladder and bowels with minimum assistance. \n\nTransportation \nFamilies are responsible for transportation to and from Denver and the Griffith Lodge in Breckenridge. \n\nApplication Process \nPlease visit https://redcap.childrenscolorado.org/surveys/?s=JKWDYE8AFN to fill out the online application as well as any attachments required in the application. DESCRIPTION:Download Camp Little Tree Flyer. \nOverview \nCamp Little Tree\, a program of Children’s Hospital Colorado and hosted by the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC)\, is a special camp for children 9 to 11 years of age with developmental disabilities\, learning disabilities and sensory integration (SI) impairments. The program is designed to meet the unique needs of these children and facilitates peer interaction with therapeutic support in camp activities. Occupational Therapy (OT) principles are used to provide sensory processing\, sensory-motor\, social and self-care support. Adapting these traditional camp activities fosters success and a sense of achievement in a mountain camp setting. \nFocus is placed on developing independence\, competence\, social skills and self esteem. Children live\, work and play\nin a “family” group of 8-10 campers\, 2-3 outdoor educators from the BOEC\, and 2-3 specialized OTs from Children’s Hospital. Campers assist in cooking and cabin clean-up along with peers and adults. Children participate daily in climbing\, canoeing\, ropes course and outdoor education. Your child will receive support for their sensory differences while engaging in community-based activities such as field games\, crafts\, journal writing\, and fishing. Involvement in these programs encourages motor skills\, coordination\, motor planning and self confidence. \n\nEligible Participants \nThe Camp Little Tree program is intended for children 9-11 years of age with sensory integration difficulties. In addition\, the following criteria for participation have been established: \n\nMust be fully independent with all toileting skills\nMust be able to follow instructions and comply with adult requests\nMust be able to remain with a group of up to 13 people without direct one-on-one attention\nMust not have extreme emotional and/or psychological distress\nMust have therapist’s recommendation for involvement in the camp\n\n\nTransportation \nFamilies are responsible for transportation to and from Denver and the Griffith Lodge in Breckenridge. \n\nApplication Process \nPlease visit https://redcap.childrenscolorado.org/surveys/?s=9YXDXFHYMA to fill out the online application as well as any attachments required in the application. SUMMARY:Challenge By Choice Adventure Retreat I
DESCRIPTION:The Challenge by Choice Adventure Retreat\, run in partnership with the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado\, features six days of outdoor adventure for survivors of an injury to the brain. Come stay in our accessible lodge and enjoy activities such as accessible ropes course\, hand cycling\, wall climbing\, canoeing\, fishing\, hiking\, rock-climbing\, and even a wild dance party! \nThis retreat is custom designed for adults\, aged 17 and above and is staffed by volunteers\, a registered nurse\, and BOEC staff/instructors and interns. All abilities are welcome to apply.
